On January 21st I was struck by Amanda Gorman's words and I found myself needing to use those words in the only way I, as a maker, could do. I took her words, arranged them into a yellow paper with the right spacing to be hand-cut and I used meaningful font (Courier font, because it reminds me of a typewriter and that's what I fantasize a poet writes) and subsequently I wove those words. I started without a clear plan, but the urgent need to weave those words.

One of the verses that resounded with me was:

a nation that isn't broken
but simply unfinished
We the successors of a country and a time
Where a skinny Black girl
descended from slaves and raised by a single mother
can dream of becoming president
only to find herself reciting for one

So this is my version of that amazing skinny Black girl reciting for a president and showing us how we can heal.
